With LE: NOTRE, the European Council of Landscape Architecture Schools (ECLAS) has established a network to facilitate international communication for landscape architects. The participants so far include around 100 universities in 30 countries.

 
We are living in interesting times. While the responsible ministers of the European Union countries call for the creation of an internationally attractive ”European Higher Education Area” by 2010, and national politicians are talking of establishing ”elite” and ”world class” universities as the essential precondition for making Europe competitive in the coming ”knowledge economy”, not only are they failing to provide the necessary additional money to put these goals into practice, but they are actually cutting back on higher education funding.

The only, very minor, consolation which can be found in the current situation is that it is not just university teachers who are complaining about this state of affairs. The European Commission has also drawn attention to the likelihood that the 2010 target will not be met unless more investment is forthcoming by means of an official ”Communication” to the Council of Ministers.
